Strand On The Green

16th September 2018

The tidal Thames at Strand on the Green was in terrible form on Sunday for round five of the championship. Several of the match group were reporting catching bags of up to 100lbs of bream at this often prolific venue at the start season, but since then, with no significant rainfall and blazing hot temperatures all summer, the sport has gradually deteriorated. Perry Fairclough needed only five small skimmers and a few roach to take the honours with 5-11-0. Perry used the standard open end feeder and maggot hookbait tactics at the Bulls Head section to record the win and moves up to fifth in the table. Second place went to Bob Lane who was pegged just above the island. Bob also fished the open end feeder but opted for a fishmeal mix and dead maggot hookbait. Bream supremo Declan Kelly scored well again taking third place and moves up into third in the table. Section winners were Glen Briggs and Doug Read. Doug also won the specimen with his only fish of the day, a bream of just 2-2-0. Also worth a mention are a 1-1-0 roach caught by Roy Cadden and a small carp caught by Mike Smith who was pegged just below the railway bridge. Round six is this Sunday 23rd September at Runnymede. There have been reports that the roach are showing well, so hopefully there will be plenty of bites for all, unlike this dour affair.
