Rickmansworth River Colne

19th August 2018

The Colne at Rickmansworth was in great condition for round three of the series on Sunday, and with good flow, a tinge of colour and light cloud cover the scene was set for an interesting match. There were dace, roach, and perch in abundance and a lot of small chublets, which bodes well for the future of the stretch as these fish grow on and hopefully continue to proliferate. Jon Colman, pegged in the strait, a few swims above the playground bridge, ran out a clear winner with two decent bream (including one of 6-13-4) to supplement his catch of small fish caught on the pole with maggot hookbaits. Jon was aware that he was in an area where bream have shown in past matches, and a switch to a worm hookbait proved to be a decisive move that instantly produced a bonus bream and another later that won him the match. Runner up Gary Bloomfield started by catching regularly on the pole, but his instincts told him the fish were sitting further down his peg and a change to a running line and a longer trot saw him catch virtually every cast until the sun eventually came out and slowed his rate. Frank Bursnall had a busy day on the stick to finish third and section winner Martin Smith also won the specimen on the day with a chub of 1-8-0. Others worth a mention are a 2-1-0 barbel caught by section winner Bill Parker, and a splendid 1-13-0 perch caught by Doug Read.
