Eighteen anglers lined up to do battle in blazing sunshine and searing heat at an out of form Strand on the Green on Sunday. Glen Briggs needed only 17-14-0 to win this low weight match, a catch which comprised of just four decent bream from peg sixteen in the Bell and Crown section. Next door on seventeen was Darren Chenery who was biteless halfway through the match, and with reports coming through from the downstream Bulls Head section that it was extremely hard, with only a couple of fish caught, he was contemplating the possibility of a blank. However, as we moved into the final third of the match Darren’s fortunes changed dramatically, as three bream in quick succession meant that he was suddenly in the hunt for a place in the frame or even a win. Unfortunately, with no further bites (apart from an eel – eels did not count in the match) he had to settle for the runner up spot, which was still a great result considering he looked dead and buried for the majority of the match. Perry Fairclough was also struggling and biteless until the final minute of the match when a superb 6-10-0 bream took his bait and gave him the third-place spot and also won the specimen on the day. Roy Cadden needed only one bream to win the Bulls Head section and Garry Bloomfield took the honours at the Bell and Crown end.
