Mike Smith scored his first win of the championship series in style on Sunday with the best weight of the current series so far. He did his homework on this interesting but quite tricky venue by paying a mid-week visit, a trip that turned out to be well worth while, as the tactics he worked out were spot on for the match itself. Mike caught a lot of big carp in practice on the slow sinking bubble, fishing a pellet or wafter hookbait, and employed the same method in the match to catch carp up to fifteen pounds for a total of 72-3-0. Runner up Jon Colman who was two pegs away from Mike, got off to a great start with a double figure carp on his first cast and went on to put a creditable 41-1-12 on the scales. Jon fished a cage feeder and pellet and wafter hookbaits. Third spot went to match captain Fred Fairman who had four carp, three of which he caught late down the edge, which included a beauty of 17-6-0, the biggest fish of the series so far, for a total of 36-0-0. Section winners were Perry Fairclough, Dave Mustoe and Glen Briggs. There were some decent catches of roach made by Frank Bursnall and Mick Catten Jnr, but it was clear that to be able to compete in this match you needed to catch carp. There was Fred’s seventeen pounder, plus a couple of fifteen pounders and several doubles caught. Just one of those fish would’ve wiped out the roach catches. It was obvious from the result that there were areas with more carp than others, but full credit to those who did well.
