River Thames – Walton

30th June 2019

The opening match of the series on the river Thames at Walton turned out to be a pretty dour event for most, as the resident shoals of quality roach refused to feed in the clear water and bright sunshine. Ryan Fairclough got off to a flying start with two early bream on a groundbait feeder from his swim near Walton Bridge, he then added a couple of decent skimmers to his net to run out a clear winner with just 13-8-0. The runner up spot went to river man Simon Pavey who worked hard to put together a mixed catch of small roach, dace and perch for 5-9-0, and third was Graham Fox who also grafted for a similar catch of small fish for 5-2-0. Section winners were Perry Fairclough and Mike Smith. Mike also won the specimen with a nice perch of 1-1-0 which was a real bonus on the day. Also, worth a mention is that Perry Fairclough hooked a big carp on the feeder in the last few minutes of the match that broke him, even though he was using fairly hefty tackle, as he frantically tried to release his line from the line clip. No doubt, that fish would have won the match outright for Perry and would’ve made it a ‘one two’ for Team Fairclough.

1 – Ryan Fairclough – 13-8-0
2 – Simon Pavey – 5-9-0
3 – Graham Fox – 5-2-0

Mike Smith – Perch – 1-1-0
