Wood Lane

6th January 2019

Wood Lane was in a tricky mood for the latest round of the championship series on Sunday. The recent inconsistent form at the venue continued, with several of the normally fancied pegs not really producing the goods, and it was Mike Smith who took the honours from an open water peg for his first win of the current series. Although the day of the match was quite mild, it was preceded by a cold spell, so Mike tailored his approach accordingly and fished bread on the pole at 14.5 metres with no loose feed at all, a simple but effective tactic that managed to tempt five carp for his match winning total of 47-14-0. Second place went to Ron Chenery who started the match dobbing bread along the reeds in his corner peg but the carp were out of reach of his 16 metre pole so he switched to a small maggot feeder and took four carp to claim the runner up spot. Third place went to Richard Day who had two carp plus a lovely perch and a few roach from for a total of 23-3-0. The specimen on the day was shared between Bob Lane and Ron Chenery who both had a 1-12-0 perch each, also worth a mention is Stuart Pollmer’s 17lb carp that was hooked on relatively light tackle in the latter stages of the match and Dave Mustoe’s 12lber that he hooked on roach gear with 15 minutes to go. Both Dave and Stuart showed great patience and skill to tame the hard fighting fish and both deserved the cheers from the group when they finally managed to net them.
