Winkwell – GUC

18th November 2018

Graham Fox brought his considerable canal match fishing experience to bear to win round eleven of the championship series on a difficult Grand Union canal at Winkwell. Drawn in the wide section opposite the marina, he had to contend with rafts of floating leaves which made getting a rig in very awkward at times and also a tricky broken background, which was making it difficult to see his float and spot bites. Graham opened up with two golf balls of liquidised bread with a little gravel added on his eleven metre line and also potted in a small amount of chopped worm down the track as a second option. Punched bread over the liquidised proved to be the killer as he took around seventy small roach and a few eyeball perch from the worm line for just 2-8-0, enough to win this toughest of matches. Runner up Keith Gibson scored well again taking a steady run of small roach fishing pinkies at fourteen metres tight to the boats from his peg in the section above the lock. Third place went to the in-form Bob Lane and the section winners were Simon Pavey and Stuart Pollmer. Stuart also won the specimen with a skimmer of just 0-6-4. The only other thing worth a mention is that Bob Lane hooked and was broken by a large match winning chub on his worm line. Well done to all who took part in this tricky match. The hard overnight frost and the cold easterly wind certainly took its toll…
