Keith Gibson’s 31-0-0 was enough to give him first place in an intense battle at a packed out Pondwood
19th November 2017
Twenty three anglers crammed in around Pondwood fishery on Sunday for round eleven of the series and once again this small venue held up very well under the extreme angler pressure with almost everyone getting bites despite a cold snap and hard frosts in the days leading up to the match. Top place went to Keith Gibson who notched up his first victory of the current series with a weight of 31-0-0. After a slow start fishing pellet, Keith scaled down his tackle and switched to maggot hookbait, a move that changed his fortunes and proved to be decisive on the day. Lifting and dropping a single maggot at thirteen metres on a size twenty saw him take a steady run of small carp throughout the day, many of them ripping the elastic out of his top kit as they took it on the drop. Second place went to Graham Fox who also switched to maggot after starting on pellet and later fished the waggler as the fish were backing away from the pole line in the bright sunshine and clear water. Third was Glen Briggs with 27-9-0 and section winners were Dave Mustoe, Declan Kelly and Mick Catten jnr. Bob Lane won the specimen with a splendid carp of 10-5-0 caught on the pole at 10 metres. It took all of Bob’s experience and skill to very carefully play the carp and eventually land it on an .010 hook length.
